The Theatre of the Oppressed goes back to the Brazilian Augusto Boal, who is considered one of the most important theatre makers of our time. The approach combines political awareness raising with liberating pedagogy and uses the theatre as a public forum. An important goal is the involvement of the audience in the form of a genuine dialogue. Various games, exercises, and techniques are used with which the actors can theatrically present their life reality and test steps for change. In the meantime, this form of theatre is practised in many different countries and has also become an integral part of theatre education in Germany.
The Berlin Papers on Theatre of the Oppressed has set itself the task of making innovative and exciting approaches from the world of Theatre of the Oppressed accessible to the public. In this way, a publicistic contribution to its further dissemination is to be made. In addition to theatre studies, interesting projects will be presented that can serve as inspiration for one's own theatre practice.
