The series Earth View - Geography and Geoinformation is intended to present research results and work in the field of Earth System Research. The view of the Earth as a system is urgently required as the content of current and future joint research in the field of Earth sciences. On the one hand, the challenges lie in the exploration of the manifold interactions between the various sub-areas of the Earth system. These include interactions between the solid Earth and the atmosphere, between the land surface and the hydrosphere or between the biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. With its central demands for use (nutrition - agricultural use - resource use), mankind is at the centre of a multiply networked Earth system. Humans change landscapes and the atmosphere and thus intervene in all scale ranges of the Earth system. To this extent, these changes must be observed and evaluated so that concepts for sustainable Earth System management can be developed on the various space and time scales. The new geoinformation technologies (geostatistics; geographic information systems - GIS; airborne and satellite remote sensing systems - remote sensing) help to observe and understand the Earth system. Without this technology, a holistic view of the Earth and a comprehensive provision of information about the Earth system is not possible.
