Understanding Ukraine

The 2013–2014 Euromaidan Revolution’s call for justice, dignity, and liberty brought Ukraine, which had ’disappeared ’ behind the Iron Curtain for decades after the horrors of World War II, into the world’s public consciousness. Yet, the country was soon almost forgotten again. In early 2022, the rapid escalation of Putin’s war on Ukraine has put the country back into the spotlight. Without knowing the country’s past, one cannot understand its present.
This anthology tackles the complex history of terror and violence in Ukraine – from the millionfold starvation of the Holodomor to the changing occupation regimes, from the ’Shoah by Bullets’ to the Chornobyl disaster. Those ready to delve deeper into the checkered, painful history of the country will better understand Ukraine’s current quest for independence, freedom, and democracy.

Marieluise Beck

Marieluise Beck has for decades been a notable German politician. She was, among others, Member of the German Bundestag for the Green Party and speaker of her parliamentary group for Eastern Europe. Beck co-founded, in 2017, the Center for Liberal Modernity (LibMod) in Berlin. LibMod is an independent think tank that stands for the defense of liberal democracy and accompanies Eastern European countries in their transition to internationally embedded, law-governed, and pluralistic societies.

Timothy Snyder

Timothy Snyder is the Levin Professor of History and Global Affairs at Yale University and the author of a number of books, including Bloodlands, The Road to Unfreedom, and the forthcoming On Freedom.

Anna Veronika Wendland

Wendland, PD Dr. Anna Veronika (* 1966), Osteuropa- und Technikhistorikerin am Herder-Institut für historische Ostmitteleuropaforschung in Marburg und Mitglied der Deutsch-Ukrainischen Historikerkommission. Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten zählen Nationalismus- und Sicherheitsforschung mit dem Schwerpunkt Kerntechnik. Wendland ist häufige Ansprechpartnerin für Medien und Politik zu Fragen der Nuklearsicherheit in der Ukraine. Ihre neueste Monografie zum Thema Ukraine lautet Befreiungskrieg. Nationsbildung und Gewalt in der Ukraine (2023).

Grinchenko, Prof. Dr. Gelinada (* 1971), wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Historischen Seminar der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München und Professorin am Lehrstuhl für Weltgeschichte an der Nationalen Oles-Hontschar-Universität Dnipro (bis 2023 am Lehrstuhl für Ukrainistik an der Nationalen V.N. Karasin-Universität Charkiw). Chefredakteurin der wissenschaftlichen Zeitschrift Ukrajina Moderna, Co-Vorsitzende der Deutsch-Ukrainischen Historischen Kommission und der Ukrainian Oral History Association (UOHA). Forschungsschwerpunkte: Oral History, Geschichte und Erinnerung des Zweiten Weltkriegs, Memory Studies, Holocaust- und Genozidforschung.

Gerhard Simon

Simon, Prof. Dr. Gerhard (* 1937) ist pensionierter Professor für Osteuropäische Geschichte an der Universität zu Köln. Von 1967 bis 2000 war er leitender Mitarbeiter im Bundesinstitut für ostwissenschaftliche und internationale Studien in Köln. Seine wichtigsten Arbeitsgebiete waren Nationalismus und Nationen in der Sowjetunion sowie der Untergang der Sowjetunion. Seit 1991 zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen zur neueren ukrainischen Geschichte und Zeitgeschichte, publiziert vor allem in der Zeitschrift Osteuropa.
